How computer use affects your eyes

Computer Eyestrain Syndrome is common among computer users who spend extensive amounts of time in front of computer screens. Here are some agreed upon tips for reducing eyestrain.

Eyeglass wearers make sure that your prescription is current.

-If you don't presently wear glasses or contacts, please visit your local eye care provider for an exam. Many companies have promotional offers for eye exams.

-Let your Optometrist know if you are a frequent computer user. He/She may suggest ordering glasses with Anti-glare feature. There are specially manufactured glasses for computer users.

-Buying new glasses not an option? Try wearing UV protected sunglasses. The level of tint is up to you.

Make your working station ergonomically correct by

-Adjusting your computer screen slightly below eye level (~10-15 degrees) and slightly tilted as if reading a book.

-Position the screen 16-22 inches away from your eyes

-Bifocal users should tilt the screen according to what is most comfortable in preventing excessive head tilting

-Adjust your chair so that it allows for the above mentioned 10-15 degree below eye level suggestion

-Use a document holder placed next to the screen to prevent constant change in eye focus

Computer screen glare can be prevented or reduced by positioning the screen away from direct light coming in through a window or directly overhead.

-Computer Anti-glare screens can also be purchased from your local computer store or office supply chain.

-Control the screen's brightness by adjusting the "contrast" feature on your computer. The contrast is between the characters on the screen and the background.

Eyestrain is reduced with intervals of break time.

-Try looking away from the screen every 15-30 minutes for a minute or less while focusing on something in the distance.

-You should try this every 2 hours of continuous computer viewing.

-Try applying a warm or cold compress over the eyes, to soothe and/or refresh the eye muscles.

If you continue to experience eye discomfort please contact your local eye care professional and ask as many questions as are necessary.
