Think of the last time you were on an airplane, ready to endure a long uncomfortable flight only to be disrupted by a screaming child. Admittedly, your first reaction is probably a secret desire to get that crying baby's parents to quiet it as soon as possible. Unfortunately for the parents of this misbehaved child, their baby's behavior is a direct reflection on them. Much in the same way, your home's decor is a direct reflection on you.
If the parents of the screaming child on the airplane do nothing for the duration of the entire flight, most passengers would probably assume the parents have poor parenting skills. This can parallel the fact that if you do absolutely nothing to your home except for the bare minimum, visitors will assume you are either cheap, lazy, or if you are lucky, still in the process of moving. Why would you not care enough to decorate the place you are living? Decorating your home is a chance to express yourself and your personality in a grand way.
If, on the other hand, the parents of the crying baby attempt to quiet their child, you will appreciate their efforts greatly, despite whether they are successful or not. This rings true to decorating your home as well. If your guest can see that you have attempted to design and decorate your home, he or she will appreciate your style even if it is not his or her particular decorating taste. If anything, the unexpected design will add interest and even possibly become a topic for conversation.
If and when the misbehaving child's parents do manage to calm their baby, you will most likely assume that they are good parents who love and care for their child. In addition, you will probably realize that they respect those around them and in some cases, you may even be tempted to ask them their secret! Once again, your home's decor, when done right, is not only spectacular but a direct reflection of you. Perhaps you choose to paint the walls your favorite color or choose a particular decorating style such as modern sleek clean lines to emphasize your organized and responsible personality. If you enjoy nature, you will most likely have plants in your house. Do you own big overstuffed comfortable furniture? You probably have a large family.
Just as you would judge the airplane child's behavior based on how the parents handle the situation, realize that your home's decor reflects who you are as a person. In fact, next time you visit a close friend's home, look around at find five things about the decor that you know reflects him or her. This will help you realize that people who visit your home are judging you based on your home's decor.
