I am shocked and dismayed to see that the number one argument against this debate is that homosexuality is a sin and that by allowing homosexuals to have all the benefits of marriage we are rewarding them. I wonder if your God has a problem with the color brown because, if so then I do suppose that I too will be being punished for the genetic coloring of my hair. I do however, agree with one argument that this person put forth and that argument is that we are all sinners. With that being said then is it not also true that we do not have the right to judge another mans sin if it is not against the ten commandments. God gave us a specific list that we based our Government off of and on that list it says nothing of sexual orientation.
It seems to be a very common notion that marriage is a religious institution only entered into through God and the church. This however, is a common misconception as our government does acknowledge marriage outside of the church. So, I believe that the debate for this very controversial question should be based off of more than just religion but, our legal institutions as well. If this is the case than one would think that our country would be more open to this idea seeing as how we separated ourselves from England with the idea of freedom. We've fought for hundreds of years for the liberty of pursuing our own destinies in life. So, why is this such a big issue? Are same sex marriages in some way causing those that disagree with it some sort of bodily harm? The answer is no. I believe that we, as a people, argue about these issues for the grand sake of arguing and taking a side. Our ignorance is our prejudice.
It's kind of funny actually because if you think about it our religious beliefs, our deciding factors of right and wrong, that cause us to be so prejudice. The Catholic Church persicuted the so called witches using the book, " Malleus Maleficarum" and this is just one example of prejudice inside of a religion. Everyone talks of Christ coming to earth and dieing a mortals death on the cross for our sins so that we may be forgiven. Where though is our self sacrifice and forgiveness? You don't have to believe in same sex marriage or even condone it but, you can show compassion and understanding of other peoples right to believe and worship in their own ways. Besides in the grand scheme of things marriage is a companionship and a choice. No matter our sexual orientation, marriage is in the simplest of forms a decision between two people to spend the rest of their lives together and to love one another till death. With this being said then, yes homosexuals should receive all the same rights and benefits of marriage.
