Ten sources of inspiration for atheists

Why Atheists are bound for Heaven

As atheists we have a huge burden to bear. Our broad shoulders are buckling under the weight of responsibility to the human race. We have enormous duties to perform throughout our lives; we have an important role to play in the development and evolution of mankind. We are put on this earth to broaden the scope of any enquiring mind we see fit to accept in our ranks and are told to foster the notion that an alternative to religious belief may exist.

We are unblessed with rational and enquiring minds, given the intelligence to fathom our universe from a unique perspective, told to make sense of the world around us without the assistance of a conceptualized almighty on which to apportion blame for the chaos. We are a minority and as such are to suffer the pain of rejection and isolation, the moderate christian despises the religious fanatic but feels genuine sorrow for the atheist whose soul is beyond redemption because that's forever.

We watch as the various religious factions squabble for supremacy, knowing all along that, as atheists, we are scorned and ridiculed more than any faction. We try harder to be liked and to have our point of view accepted knowing full well that our ideals are never going to be truly understood. We are left without any spiritual assistance when we need it and the last people we can ever rely on for any comfort are the very people who preach it most. We rely on our natural sense of right and wrong to show us the path we need to take, we embrace no ideology to assist in our quest toward the straight and narrow.

For all this we are likened to the antichrist, one tiny step above devil worship and a breath away from eternal damnation. We are told that our lives are spiritually empty by people who equate religious belief with spirituality as if the two were mutually exclusive. We are told that our ideals stem from laziness, that we are what we are because we do not have the courage to follow a religious edict, that we are examples of evil having conquered good, of the devil having stolen another soul. It's no surprise that we limit our discussions to the very few.

And all along we simply try to educate and inform what we believe to be the misguided masses. We don't go door to door because we believe in free will, we don't rally or protest because ours is an intellectual quest and therefore not for everybody, we may be arrogant but who isn't, we let you live on our planet because we are a tolerant lot, and yes we are all going to heaven because God gave us this responsibility and we, well and truly, will have paid our debt to society when the time comes.

But we do have one trait that is undeniable....we do have a sense of humour!
