Overview of the Abel prize

The Niels Henrik Abel Memorial Fund was established on January 1, 2002, to award the Abel Prize for outstanding work in the field of mathematics. The prize amount is currently 750,000 Euros ($920,000 USD) and was first awarded on June 3, 2003.

The Abel Prize is awarded by the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, based upon the recommendations of a committee of 5 noted mathematicians. They review the work of all nominees submit a their recommendation for the winner.

The winner of the Abel Prize in 2006 is Lennart Carleson from the Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden. He was awarded the prize for, "his profound and seminal contributions to harmonic analysis and the theory of smooth dynamical systems."
