Facts about Cozumel, Mexico

So you want to go to Cozume Mexico. Here are some gret facts for you to know to prepare you for your trip. Cozumel happens to be a favorite spot for tourists as well as honeymooners. You can even have your wedding ceremony right on the island.

Cozumel is located an island off the eastern coast of Mexico's peninsula on the Caribbean Sea. It is the third largest of the islands that it is known to be a part of. It belongs with the Tiburon Island and the Isla Angel of de la Guarda.The island has been hit be hurricanes 4 times in 2005. However the island is fully recovered and is ready for tourist to come back. Tourism is its sole means of economic growth.

The island is perfect for scuba diving, deep sea fishing and snorkeling. you can even take a swim with the dolophins. There is a beautiful corral reef off the coast for many to explore.On the southern tip of the island there is a famous lighthouse for all to see. The Punta Celeran.Sunsets are said to be paradise.

Mr Jacques Cousteau first found the island and made it a sea turtle sanctuary. Today in the middle of the island is the Chankanaab National Park and the Punta Sur Ecological Reserve. The middle of the island is the least explored as it has jungles, swamps and lagoons.

The Mayan Indians are said to be the very fisrt inhabitiants of the island. There is a mystery to the island they say. the largest mayan site on the entire island is the San Gervasio. The Mayan Indians lived there from 200 AD until the Spanish Conquest. There is also a famous temple on the island known as the El Cedral. This temple is the oldest on the island. Near the northern tip of the island you can find the Castillo Real. Also known as the Royal Castle. It is over 1200 years old. In the Punta Sur Ecological Reserve you will find the El Carcol. A building that was built between 1200 and 1400 years ago.

Shopping and Dinning are favorite past times on the island as well. There are more than 90 resturants alone. So anyone can find thier favorite menu item or perhaps try a new and exciting dish. Some offer music and discos to dance til the sun comes up. Perhpas you would like to play a round of golf in the 18 hole golf course. dont forget to pack your clubs! Maybe the ladies can go to the spa on the island while the guys are playing golf. There is a total of five spas on the island so relaxing can be achieved.
