says, "We bonded, sissy." And I believe him because once you've been touched by Michael; life never is quite the same.
Additionally, Michael is loyal and pure-hearted. He makes friends for life and gives of himself completely. His love is unconditional and patient. When others are consumed with the stress and struggle of life, he is patient and serene. He is understanding and forgiving of people's shortcomings and faults. He is non-judgmental and frequently states (or stutters), "Most of the time, people do the best they can, Sissy. They make mistakes to learn and understand their purpose."
Despite the fact that Michael has a hard time tying his shoes and has a heavy speech impediment or even that he cannot read, he is completely satisfied with himself and his life. He says, "Sissy, you got to remember the secret." Why do I always ask, "What is the secret?", because he always says, "Be happy with what you got."
All his life in school, the other children made fun of him and tagged him with the nickname 'Freak'. He didn't care; he tried to play with them anyway. Even when they were mean, he was nice to them. Michael was a happy child, unless you were trying to put clothes on him or attempting to make him be still for more than 3 seconds at a time. When he was in elementary school, I don't think he really understood what 'freak' meant. But, as he entered into middle school, he became aware of their meanness.
This is a hard time for all kids. It was especially hard for Michael. But, he figured out how to make them leave him alone. He grew tall and lanky and hairy. He practiced his scary face and became interested in leather and motorcycles. He developed a fascination for skulls and heavy metal music. He later learned that he was German and erroneously connected himself with the Nazi's. So, for a time he collected anything he could get his hands on about Hitler. It took me 10 years to finally rid him off all the Hitler garbage. Which entailed an in depth conversation about that era in our history. We both are very savvy on Hitler! But none the less, by the time he made it to high school, the kids no longer teased Michael and he made it through high school, Class of 1996, with a completion certificate, not a diploma.
Michael has since shed all the Hitler gear, but he still enjoys heavy metal music, particularly Black Sabbath. He loves motorcycles and CB radios. Most every article of clothing he owns is black or has flames or skulls on them. He met a lovely girl 10 years ago and they were married in 1999. Her name is Mary but he calls her Mrs. Harley or Pookie Momma. He's developed an ability to laugh at himself and could make a great living as a comedian but I don't think it would be politically correct. He has taught me that it is okay to be different. And most times it's even better.
Michael's struggles in life may cause a person to feel pity initially, however, to every life I've seen him touch, I've witnessed miracles. His direct connection to life and its purpose is inspiring to me and his love for life gives me strength. No matter how difficult a task may be, he never gives up. His uncanny understanding of our purpose on earth provides stability, substance, and hope to my family.
Blessed Contentment. Being happy with what I got. Hmmm....simple and true. I'm proud to say, I'm finally learning how to be content. I'm learning how to accept myself for all that I am. I'm learning that my best and His grace are sufficient. God has been good to give us Michael. Maybe we could all do with a trip on that short bus!
