Credit Card companies should not visit college campuses at all because that was how I got into debt. The credit card companies that visited my college ask me if I enjoy shopping. I answered sort of. He then told me I shouldn't have asked that question because it was obvious that I enjoy shopping because I am a woman and what type of women hate to shop?

He then told me about a credit card to sign up for and asked me if I had a job. I told him that I was working but only part time. He then asked me how long have I been working for that particular employer. I told him how long I have been there which was only two and a half years. Then he said "Great, now I am qualified for a pre-approved credit card". I asked him how did I qualify with such low income? Then he told me that a credit card would pay for everything even if I wasn't working that many hours at my job. He told me that it was a second type of income that would supplement the income I lack from the paycheck I bring home. He also asked me if my parents are helping me out financially. I told him that I would be working and going to school at the same time. Then he told me that is why having a credit card is so important. It would help me pay for my tuition once I transfer to a four year college and pay for things that my parents wouldn't provide for me. So, I signed the bottom line and got my first credit card within seven-ten business days.

I believed every "lie" this salesman told me about his credit card. I didn't know that interest payments would be so high once I used the credit card for useless things like cds, games, etc. He should have told me the truth that if I wasn't making enough money to pay back the items I charged to the creditor, I am not qualified to get one. I don't see how working at a minimum wage job can pay back all the interest rates that the creditor charge. Why apply for a credit card if students don't make enough to pay back the entire balance of what they bought? Most of the majority of students work at some minimum wage job and go to school at the same time. Basically, they don't have enough money to pay off the interest rates.

College students think that once they are eighteen, they have freedom. They think that once they receive a credit card, that it is money in a plastic card. They don't think that there will be interest rates involved with the purchase. So, these salespeople should stay away from college campuses everywhere. They don't give college students warning that it should only be used in an emergency. So, why visit the colleges at all? Most of the majority of the college students will be in debt once they graduate because of their student loans. They don't need more debt.
