Decorating with mosaics

Changing the colors, adding borders or mosaic rugs divides the space by use. The entire bath can become one single scene if every surface is covered with mosaic. A dressing table can be created by framing a mirror with mosaic and decorating a section of countertop or the whole countertop with mosaics.

The entire bath can become one single scene if every surface is covered with mosaic. Or, a monochromatic mosaic can be applied to the whole bathroom, creating an incredibly spacious feeling in a small bath. Do not forget that cabinets and cabinet insets can be decorated with mosaics in addition to countertops, floors, wall, showers, and tub surrounds.

Baths can also be decorated with mosaics without any construction. Accessories such as soap dispensers and toothbrush holders can be decorated with mosaics. Movable mosaic rugs are also available and can be combined with other mosaic accessories in a bath to create a mosaic-decorated bath without any mosaic installation.

IN OTHER ROOMS

Mosaic floors can create rugs and subdivide large spaces in any room. Mosaics in entryways define the space and encourage a visitor to linger and admire the mosaic. Or, mosaic entries can welcome visitors or encourage them to move quickly through the space. Mosaics can frame important views or direct traffic to public spaces and away from private ones. Fireplace surrounds and mantles benefit from mosaic decoration, calling even more attention to the hearth as the focal point of an inviting room. If a room has no focal point, one can be created with a framed mosaic on a wall.

Mosaics do not have to be limited to permanent surfaces. Furniture decorated with mosaics is found in stores and fun to create. Old and worn-out pieces can be revitalized with mosaic decoration. Like breakfast tables, dining tables with mosaic tops add interest to the room and are easy to clean. Almost any table can have a mosaic top: end tables, coffee tables, and bedside tables. Buffets and breakfronts can coordinate with a mosaic dining table or with other non-mosaic pieces. The interior of bookcases and cabinets can be decorated with mosaics to create depth or interest. One warning: chairs with mosaic seats can be uncomfortable, so make sure that the mortar is perfectly even with the tiles on the backs and seats of chairs to prevent sharp edges.

IN INDOOR/OUTDOOR SPACES

In screened porches, outdoor rooms, or other rooms that are exposed to the elements, mosaics provide care-free, worry-free, and fade-resistant decorations and surfaces. Chairs, benches, and stools look beautiful when decorated with mosaics, and are functional provided that the mortar is even with the tile. Mosaics can be used on tabletops and outdoor kitchen surfaces. Floors, rugs, and pathways appear when mosaics are applied to floors and patios or set in dirt as pavers. Mosaics can decorate courtyard walls or planters. Remember that, just as inside the home, mosaics can be as wild or as subdued as you wish depending on the color and materials used.
