Movie reviews: Enchanted (2007)

Enchanted begins in typical Disney animated style, introducing us to Giselle, a pretty young woman looking for her one true love and his kiss. Giselle finally meets Prince Edward and the two prepare to marry. However Edward's step-mother Queen Narissa doesn't want the marriage to go ahead, and sends Giselle into the 'real world' via a magic well. Edward decides to rescue his princess and also goes into the real world, along with servant Nathaniel. But will he find Giselle in huge New York City, and will their love remain true?

As you can see, it seems like a very nice sweet Disney plot, all true love and kisses, and it pretty much follows this suit all the way through the film. Giselle is played by Amy Adams, a young American actress I haven't seen in anything before. She pulls off the naive, loving caring girl perfectly, from her sweet 'Princess-voice' to her cheerful nature and look throughout the film. She is dressed in beautiful dresses with flowing hair and a happy outlook for everything, emphasising the Princess style lead character prominent in all Disney films and injecting a sense of fun into the whole thing. She is a perfect lead actress, with a great singing voice and ability to carry the film by herself superbly.

Her beaus and co-stars are Patrick Dempsey (Grey's Anatomy) and James Marsden (X-Men). Dempsey takes on the role of Robert, a dad and New Yorker who by chance bumps into a lost and confused Giselle. His daughter Morgan persuades him to take her home but Robert is confused she's lost her marbles. He can't bear her singing and over-cheerfulness, but soon warms to her nature. Dempsey is great as lead male, a strong actor with a great screen presence and a great on-screen relationship with Adams. He is cynical and unsure but his character opens up as his past is revealed through a great scene with Adams.Marsden plays pompous Prince Edward who's come to rescue his true love. Marsden is totally over-the-top as Edward but it really works in this film. The character of Edward is so typical Disney-prince, and Marsden adapts the persona perfectly, and is a pleasure to watch on-screen. Timothy Spall also stars as Nathaniel, a bumbling sidekick to the evil queen and delivers a super performance typical of him, and even his own sub-plot is watchable! Finally Susan Sarandon is Queen Narissa, and puts in a fantastically comical performance, grasping the evil emotions required for the role and delivering to perfection.

As is typical in a Disney film, the
