Tips on maintaining PC health: Spyware

Spyware comes in many forms. It can be annoying pop-up ads and irritating browser redirects. It can also be data miners that download your passwords or any personal or financial information that resides on your computer. Anyone who uses the internet has to be concerned about spyware, but there are some simple precautions you can take to safeguard your computer.

Update Anti-Spyware Programs
One of the most critical things you can do is to update your anti-spyware programs regularly. Many programs have an option to download updates automatically. Turning this option on will keep your anti-spyware software current, continuously protecting your computer from new spyware applications.

Routinely Run Anti-Spyware Programs
Use your anti-spyware programs regularly. Some programs detect spyware as it tries to install, others only clean the spyware when you run the program. Routinely running a couple of different programs will catch anything that could possibly be considered suspicious, sometimes before it even becomes a problem.

Use Common Sense
Engaging in file sharing may expose more information on your computer than you intended. Think before you download any "enhancements." Screensavers and toolbar add-ons often bundle spyware programs in their install. Many add-ons will track your internet usage to deliver you custom advertising. Sometimes there are opt-out options in these programs, but that option isn't checked by default.

Pay Attention to Your Email
Be leery of opening any unsolicited email from someone that you don't know. Even if you receive an attachment from a friend, that friend may be infected and not know it. In that case, the attachment you open could be infected. Malicious code can hide in videos, downloads, and animated icons.

Review the Processes on Your Computer
Research each item to determine what's safe and necessary, and what really shouldn't be there. Most of these processes are normal and you may not find anything harmful. The next time you notice your computer running slow or getting pop-ups, check the processes again. You now have a list of what's normal for your computer, so you can quickly see what's different on your system.

Clean Your Temporary Internet Files
Every website you visit leaves behind pieces in your browser's memory. Some of these pieces may contain executable code that is launched every time you open your browser. Be sure to clean these temporary internet files regularly. This will also help with your computer's overall performance.

Research Software Before Installing
Before you install any program, research the program online. Read the reviews on reputable technology websites, and download directly from the manufacturer's website whenever possible.
