As a manager of a retail store, I feel that recognition gets more work out of a person. You can pay someone twice as much but without the recognition of a job well done, or aknowledge a person's work ethic, the job is only done out of responsibility of that position.
I try and thank everyone at the end of a shift and let them know when they have done a good job on a specific task. Everyone has a special talent and when I find it I go out of my way to let them know.
In my positon, in order to get the extra money, I have to prove myself. And it does not go unoticed by the "higher ups" , as I call the Corporate seniors. I am always going above and beyond my job duties and it shows, and it is recognized, and I feel good about myself. I know that in the long run I will be compensated and move up in the company.
There are the managers who do not appreciate their staff and they have a difficult time getting the fullest potential from their employees. Well who wants to work hard and make you look good if they don't get positive feed back? I sure wouldn't! And I have seen it too many times. I have been told by my employees that I am about the only manager who ever thanks them or tells them that they have done a great job or that without them my job would be harder. I get the respect I deserve because I give the respect to start with.
Of course you have the employees who are only there for the money. But Yes, they too need to be recognized. I also let them know when they are slacking but in a way so that they will want to do better. Everyone needs to be recognized. How many times have we been at our job and your stomach hurts because you know what you do won't make a difference to your boss? No matter how hard you try or how many times you have tried to impress your boss and it has gotten you nowhere? I know I've felt that way before. I was in the medical field for twenty-three years and not once did I feel appreciated. I went to work, I did a great job, and not so much as a pat on my back but always.. the numbers are down..statistics show..and then I totally switched careers and presto, I was aknowledged. How ironic is that?
So yes, I feel that recognition is more important than money. Although once your recognized for your job well done, than you should get a raise. That is only to be expected. Once you prove you can go above and beyond you should be compensated for your hard work.
