World of Goo
I was having one of those days, grey and not really that good. I was right in the mood to review a game and really hammer down on it, say that it was bad and made by a 3 year old with no skills. Just one of those days where you really need a ray of sunshine, and boy did this game deliver some sunshine to me.
Already when you are installing this game, you feel that this is not your average Joe Smoe game, that there is quality in this game, that it might just be a gold nugget you stumbled upon.
After installing you start the game, and immediately you are sucked into this weird world of nice music, lots of colors and an addictive game play you just can't let go. I quickly navigated the menu, made my profile and started the game.
The game itself is fairly simple, you have a certain amount of goo blobs that you navigate through a landscape in order to get to an exit (a pipe). The thing is, the goo blobs can't travel on the ground, so you have to connect them to build structures to move and get to the exit. It's so simple and yet so fun. Just remember that goo isn't solid like iron or steel, so it bends and flops around if you put to much weight on it.
To make the goo blobs move you pick them up and connect them to each other. One blob of goo must at least have connection to 2 other blobs of goo that is already in the structure to be able to be part of it, it is shown with small lines if it is possible to connect it or not.
The graphics are just as they need to be in a game like this, colorful and enjoyable. The music is hectic and gives you a sense of urgency, that you need to complete the level fast, yet it matches the game perfectly. The controls are really simple, you use the mouse for everything. Left click to pick up goo blob, move it to where you want it to be and let go.
I will not tell you to much about the game, because it's more fun for you to explore the game and find the funny things in it yourself, but in the later stages of the game you get different types of goo, harder challenges and some downright crazy and seriously funny intros. I never imagined playing with goo could be this much fun.
To be honest i love this game, it's so simple to play, yet hard to master. There is a challenge for everyone in the game. As a parent you can without problems let your kids play this game, I promise you they'll love it and so will you. Actually I would recommend to play this together with your children and have a good time figuring out the solutions to the different levels.
So when it all comes down to it, has 2D BOY delivered a gold nugget with this game ?
Oh I think so. It's a refreshing fun new game that I just can't seem to stop playing. Now if you don't mind, I have to go and get to the next level.
I rate the game 5/5
