It is crucial for us to know the side effects of any medication that we ingest because it may have toxic effects if taken improperly. We must always have the complete information from our doctor before we commence therapy. Knowing the side effects would make us careful and watchful of these side effects happening to us. Zocor is not exempt from these side effects.
Zocor under the generic name simvastatin is given to people who have high levels of cholesterol and LDL (Low Density Lipoprotein). Cholesterol and LDL are the bad lipids (fats). The drug decreases cholesterol and LDL levels thereby decreasing the risk of coronary heart diseases and related conditions.
The following are the side effects of zocor as documented by clinical trials and various studies.
1. Musculoskeletal side effects
1.1 Myopathy which is an abnormal condition of muscles characterized by myalgia ( muscle pains) and muscle weakness
Reported cases of muscle pains and muscle weakness had caused discontinuance of the drug. The patient should be aware of these side effects and should report immediately to his attending physician, any muscle pain and changes in his muscle coordination.
1.2 rhabdomyolysis
This may worsen resulting to rhabdomyolysis if medication still continues. Rhabdomyolysis is a condition in which the muscle tissues are undergoing massive destruction with the concomitant release of myoglobin. Myoglobin is an oxygen binding protein which when released in very large amounts would cause damage to the kidneys.
This side effect should be carefully monitored as it is serious and critical. The first signs of muscle pain should be reported ASAP to the doctor. If reported early the discontinuance of the drug would reverse the condition.
2. Gastrointestinal side effects
Constipation and abdominal pains have been reported. Other drugs taken in with zocor should be referred to the attending physician. There are drugs that exacerbate the side effects of zocor and it would be dangerous to take them together. The doctor should know of any additional medications.
3. Respiratory side effects
Bronchitis and sinusitis may result. Severte allergic reactions may occur, which could lead to severe
respiratory difficulties.
4. Genitourinary side effects
Urinary tract infections may occur. If rhabdomyolysis occurs, there will be a dysfunction in the kidneys because of the elevation of myoglobin.
5. Nervous system side effects
Headache, nausea and vertigo had occurred in several patients and had ranged from a mild
