Until a few years ago, the words "workout class" only conjured up images of aerobics and weightlifting - not to mention the occasional sight of neon spandex. And while these traditional types of classes are still found in gyms across the country, a new trend in fitness is emerging, including salsa, bellydancing, and hip-hop dance classes; self defense and martial arts classes; and aquatic workouts. If you're looking for something to shake up your old fitness routine, one of these might be perfect for you.
Dance classes are some of the hottest fitness activities in gyms right now, and routines range from hip-hop and street style to traditional ballroom dancing, with everything in between. For the more adventurous, there are even stripping classes. Don't write this routine off right away: these classes build upper body strength (hanging onto that pole is tougher than it looks!) and provides an amazing abdominal workout. Best of all, you will quickly learn to laugh at yourself, and shake off some of your inhibitions.
Ladies looking for a fast-paced aerobic workout will love hip-hop and Latin dance. The major advantage of dance classes is that they don't feel like "exercise", which can become a chore if we get only stick to one or two types of fitness activities, or find ourselves stuck in a rut. Dance not only provides great cardio, but is good for the spirit as well. Studies have shown that moving to music increases endorphins and makes us happier. One of the most popular dance classes is Zumba, which mixes Latin rhythms with interval training sessions combining fast and slow beats. If you like Latin music, you can find salsa, merengue, and tango classes as well. And for those who love hip-hop, you can sweat to urban beats and rap. Turbokick, for example, is a hot new class that combines hip-hop, kickboxing, and sports drills for an all-around cardio workout.
In recent years, bellydancing has emerged as a new favorite in the fitness scene. Bellydancing classes are perfect for beginners: they begin with easy movements, and provide basic steps for those who don't have much dance experience. Best of all, bellydancing provides a great workout for your entire core - not only your abdominal muscles, but your lower back as well. After a few weeks, you will find your balance better and your posture improved.
Martial arts classes are another popular trend in gyms. You can find everything from ancient kung-fu styles like Southern Praying Mantis, to self-defense classes designed
