If you are like many home owners today, you understand the importance of securing your home and your family. Simply watching the Daily News drives home the ever increasing threat that assault, burglary and vandalism pose to you, your loved ones and your personal property. Every dollar invested in securing your assets yields invaluable peace of mind, allowing you to focus your attention on the more enjoyable aspects of life.
Fortunately, even though the importance of security is increasing, the cost of providing that security is not. More advanced forms of security are now readily available and easier to install. And if you haven't noticed it is a digital world, a digital video world. The cost of recorded video security is now well within the reach of most home owners. And short of posting armed guards, no greater form of security exists than video surveillance.
The benefits of security cameras and recorded video surveillance include:
Visual proof that can be used in court.
Ability to monitor while you are away.
Cameras deter crime before it occurs.
Easy identification of unwanted visitors.
Regardless of whether you are considering a video surveillance system, need to hire a professional to install your system or you plan to install the system yourself, you should understand the basic components. A basic knowledge will help you choose the correct system and may give you the courage to tackle the installation yourself.
Home Video Surveillance has four basic components, the cameras, a recording device, cabling and a power source. Let's go into greater detail regarding each of these components. Cameras are available in many forms, but most commonly today's security cameras are of the mini dome or box variety. Mini domes are usually "ready-to-install" and the camera is enclosed in a protective dome. Box cameras are often not protected and may require the lens to be purchased separately. If you intend to install a box camera outdoors, you will need to also purchase an outdoor housing unit for the camera.
Cameras will have a few options that you may want to consider. The type of lens the camera has will determine whether the camera is focused on objects within a few feet of the cameras location or objects that are further away. Other options may include the ability to record in low light (night time), audio recording, motion sensors and IP technology. Lastly, security cameras are still available in black and white, although color is very common and does not increase the cost
