The television show "Dexter" is one of the most intriguing crime scene investigation shows I have ever seen. Dexter is no ordinary CSI. He's a blood-spatter specialist by day, and a forensically aware serial killer by night. He's no ordinary serial killer either; he only kills those who deserve it. Every kill is planned and executed to perfection, at least most of the time.
Given his character, Dexter at times flounders in his attempts at displaying normal human emotions. Since he has none, his life is a continuous act. He must observe others to see which emotion he ought to display. Harry, Dexter's adoptive father, rescued Dexter as a child from an unimaginable scene of destruction, recognised traits in Dexter that belied a dark mind with unnatural desires. Harry sought to create rules for Dexter, rules by which he must kill and live in order to avoid detection.
Due to his lack of emotion, Dexter's face is like a blank slate most of the time. When the camera focuses on him during a crucial moment, it is impossible to tell what he is thinking. He often appears shy and awkward, struggling to pretend to fit in. However, when he has chosen a victim and has them at his mercy, his intentions are quite clear. Although Dexter is meticulous and controlled, a myriad of emotions cross his face during the kill. He takes some satisfaction and joy at the act itself, but is also angry with the victim because they have killed someone who didn't deserve to die.
Dexter's sister Deborah joins the police force and has designs on becoming a detective. She brings humour to the show, and displays a strong character that is unafraid to speak her mind, whatever the consequences. She has no idea that Dexter has a night life of crime and secrecy, but loves him and is fiercely loyal Dexter meets a woman, Rita, who is perhaps the only other person who makes Dexter seem normal. The rest of the team is made up of opposing characters, each with their own personal secrets.
In series one, Dexter shares the office with Paul, who is a detective with a serious chip on his shoulder. Paul takes an instant dislike to Dexter and, like a dog with a bone, continues to hound Dexter, looking for a reason to start a fight or to have him removed. Despite his muscle-man appearance and permanent expression of hatred and mistrust, Paul has his own issues, and is really a decent man. The question is, will Paul ever accept Dexter or will there be trouble down the line?
This show intertwines the harsh reality of death with a bubbling humour that the viewer cannot help but enjoy. The characters make up a rich tapestry that continues to develop and unfold as the series goes on. Some of Dexter's victims use methods that are cruel and unusual, and rarely, if ever, seen before. With its unique presentation and strong cast of actors, Dexter brings something new and intriguing to today's television viewing.
