Winter in the Great Outdoors

We often hear about many types of skiing. Adventure seekers find thrills in helicopter skiing, being whisked to a mountain deep in wilderness and dropped to experience fresh powder on steep ridges. Backcountry skiing requires a bit more patience, discovering untrammelled areas, surrounded by nature. Options abound for every skill level.

Skiing ranks among the most popular winter sports. The prominent choice is downhill skiing. This is one fun way to go. You find a lodge and comfortably put on gear, then sit back while the lift carries you to comfortable or challenging slopes. When you finish, there is hot cocoa, coffee, or a cocktail waiting in a warm, relaxing atmosphere. Of course, this is not the only way to glide on the snow.

For those of you who wish to consider something a little farther afield and away from the crowds, I would suggest getting out into the backcountry. Various terrains offer choices for all in backcountry skiing. You can even camp in the wilderness if you are well prepared. The peace and serenity inspire awe, the workout is fantastic, and nature's wonder will lift your spirits, leaving you richer than when you began.

For those of you who do not wish to race down a mountain or create your own route through uncharted territory, you can get on cross country skis and search out a nicely groomed trail. Anywhere snow is deep, from Maine to Alaska, trails are sure to be found.

When cross country skiing, you can travel at your leisure or build up to an invigorating work out. Many places are much less crowded than downhill skilling and you have very little need to concern yourself with injury. This is the preferred method for many who are willing to go at their own pace, appreciate the lack of crowds, and have had their fill of high speeds.

The extreme sport of helicopter skiing is usually only for the most adventurous and skilled. It is also pricey. You will travel via helicopter to amazing places where you will ski territory untouched by others but this is not for the risk averse.

Whatever you plan to do this winter, you should consider getting out those old boards or renting a pair for a weekend. With so many options, you will not regret choosing to play on the snow.
