Causes of incontinence

an overactive bladder or bladder cancer, you could suffer from incontinence. People with Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, stroke victims and those who have spinal cord injuries can all experience incontinence. In some cases the cause is directly in the urinary tract in the form of obstructions and a deteriorating urinary splinter.

There are preventative measures you can take now to ensure that you do not suffer from incontinence in the future. I mentioned earlier some of the risk factors like obesity, caffeine consumption and smoking. Quitting smoking, reducing your caffeine intake and watching your weight can go a long way towards prevention. While there are some risk factors like gender and age, that you cannot change, it is important to recognize that your risk of incontinence increases with age and that women are twice as likely as men to have this condition.

For those who have been diagnosed with urinary incontinence specifically, there are many resources, medications and practical suggestions to help you get on with your day. Pelvic floor exercises are highly recommended and can be done anywhere. Make a point of scheduling your bathroom visits and stick to the schedule even when you don't feel the need to go. You can take control of a situation that can sometimes feel out of control.
