Signs of the Zodiac: Aquarius

by Donatella Coppini

Created on: October 18, 2008

Being the most original, unruly and wildest sign in the zodiac, Aquarius is ruled by Uranus. It is a bright and intelligent sign, even though it has a crazy side that is willing to experiment. It is quite restless and can be socially active as well as being extremely over opinionated and serves to change the mind.

This sign has some tendencies verging towards humanism, influenced by Neptune. Although being an air sign does cause a chilly nature which can make it inconsistent and act in a cold, calculated manner.

There tends to be a lack of tact due to it not being subtle or cautious as the other zodiacal signs. But with the help of Saturn, this can be counterbalanced. On the other hand, it can appear to be bold, sometimes childish. Usually an element which some find endearing. This tends to happen when both the Sun and Mercury are within.

Unpredictable at times, it has a tendency to misjudge people's intentions and/or motivations. It does not take criticism well, reading too much into it and taking it as personal, usually evolving into a nasty scene. It's experimental nature comes with a price of responsibility and a label reading caution.

In mythology Aquarius is associated with Ganymede, a beautiful youth who Zeus fell in love with. He carried Ganymede of in the disguise of an eagle, represented as the constellation of Aquila, to Mount Olympus to become cup bearer to the gods.

Aquarius is generally resembled as the figure of a man, and if you look closely and consider the faint humanly visible stars, it takes on the image of a man with a bucket from which is flowing water.

The Sun appears in the constellation of Aquarius from February 16 to March 11. Although in tropical astrology the Sun is in Aquarius from January 20 to February 18 and from February 15 to March 14 in sidereal astrology.

Although, according to tropical astrologers, we entered the Age of Aquarius in the 20th Century, polled astrologers believe we will not enter this phase until the 22nd Century or later. Each age is approximately 2200 years long, and defined by the equinoxes.

Being the eleventh sign of the zodiac, Aquarius attributes general personality traits which are both positive and negative. It is only complementary to one other sign, that being Leo. Although it does have a harmonious relationship with six of the signs: Pisces, Aries, Gemini, Libra, Sagittarius and Capricorn. Five of the signs it fails to get on with. It has a difficult relationship with Taurus, Leo and Scorpio and a turbulent relationship with Cancer and Virgo.
