Poetry: A girl I know

A girl I know was young and free,
Contented with life,
Contented to just 'be'.

A girl I know was fair of face,
Was bright of countenance
And always knew her place.

A girl I know was vibrant and fierce,
Lived each day with passion,
Knew no darkness, had no fears.

A girl I know was active, alive
Went where she pleased,
Was not restricted by time.

A girl I know is now a woman;
Entangled in life's surprises
Trapped in a body not chosen.

A woman I know is locked inside,
Tortured by insecurity and fear,
Unable to always hide.

A woman I know sorely misses freedom.
Give her back her life, her energy;
Release her from this mental dungeon.

A girl I know trapped inside the woman,
Peeks out from time to time,
Escapes her frightening home.

Both the woman and the little girl
Struggle to lose the pain,
To relax and let their wings unfurl.

Days like today there is clarity,
And with it comes the hope
Forever to maintain the happier personality.
