Why exercise variety leads to fitness success

Whether it is based upon seasonal changes, boredom of routine, a medical problem, a need to progress, or being stuck on a weight plateau, you may benefit from adding more variety into your exercise regime. Sometimes it is as simple as rearranging the order of your regular exercise poses. At other times, you may feel the need to add something to your regular fitness class or sign on for an entirely new venture.

Despite the ease of temperature control in most modern homes and exercise establishments, nature changes seasonally and may suggest to us to do likewise. If it is our inbuilt instinct to made alterations as each new season begins, we should take this into account. You could consider adding jogging to your regime in fall and spring, whilst including swimming during summer and an aerobics class during winter for example.

Repetition of the same old routine can bring our mood down considerably after a time. In order to ensure we continue to enjoy and benefit from our exercise routine, we may therefore need to make changes every so often. If we have taken the same Yoga class for an entire year we may wish to change to an advanced class, new style, or take up teaching training. If we are getting bored with the same gym routine, a single appointment with a personal trainer can present new options at less cost than a regular consultation.

Development or onset of a medical problem may necessitate a change in our everyday exercise program. Taking a slower pace, avoiding certain forms of exercise, and taking less strenuous options can be considered. Exercise is generally taken on to make us feel better, not worse, and continuing the same old routine when we have a new problem can be detrimental.

You may have been happy to attend Monday morning Yoga and Thursday night dance classes for a long time. There will inevitably be a time when boredom may set in, or you otherwise feel the need to progress. If you choose to stick with Yoga and dance, for example, you might benefit from a new style, time slot, teacher, or course. This enables you to stick with your chosen form of exercise, whilst allowing you to make changes within that frame. You can then learn something new and rewarding without changing your entire lifestyle.

If the main purpose of your fitness regime is to lose weight, you may feel that after the initial weight-drop you are stuck. Continuing with the same exercises that used to help you may no longer be helping you to reach your goal. This is the time to adapt or change your routine. Doing so can start the weight dropping cycle again. You might only need something as simple as changing the speed on the exercise bike or adding pace to your walking session to start things moving once again.

There are many reasons why varying your routine rather than getting stuck in a rut can be of benefit. As your body improves in fitness level and masters techniques, you need to move on or change routine rather than drop out in order to continue to feel the advantage.
