What we call the parables are actually important messages that will come to make complete sense to those who are in the right circumstances to understand them. The Son told us these things so that we should not be made to stumble and so that when the time comes, we would remember them.
The play on words also gives us clues to what the parables are referring to. The parable of the talents, seems to be speaking of coins referred to as 'talents' but it actually means our God-given talents; our innate abilities. If we put our talents to good use then we will achieve the goals that God sets before us and we will profit from them (although not in money terms).
The parable of the labourers speaks of wages or pay that is earned but remember that if the wages of sin are death, then the wages of righteousness must be life. This is the promise of eternal life.
In speaking of those who would undergo the Tribulation in Matthew 24, the Son said that many false prophets would arise and deceive many i.e. lead them onto the wrong running track. He also said that because lawlessness would abound [and the wicked would apparently be happy and prosperous because the Antichrist would corrupt with flattery those who do wickedly against the Covenant] the love of many would grow cold [fade in despair and frustration] but that he [or she] who endured to the bitter end would be saved.
The Parable of the Labourers in Matthew 20 which reflects the situation that these saints will find themselves in. Some will have worked hard from the beginning and endured much completing the whole race, while others fell by the wayside unable to sustain their efforts. Then there would be those who would come into the race late and almost seem to 'hop and skip' into heaven at the very last second.
For as Daniel said, for three and a half years, the saints will have to endure 'purging, to refine them and make them white' [ridding them of dross] which is the whole purpose of God's submitting them to persecution at the hands of the Antichrist and when the power of the Saints was completely shattered, then all things would be finished
So that it will seem that some of the elect saints of God will have run a whole marathon for the full period of 42 months, while others have completed only a sprint by coming in at the very end of the Tribulation. And when the marathon saints start to grumble, they will remember that they were told, even before they could understand it, that these sprinters would also be given exactly the same wages. The wages of eternal life.
