Simon is who people associate American Idol with. When people see Simon's face on TV, they think of American Idol. Why do I think this is so? The reason is simple. Simon portrays himself as the real deal. He says what he means and he means what he says. He doesn't try to camouflage a bad statement with fluff (a la Paula). Because of his experience in the music industry, he definitely knows what he sees, and hears. He knows what can sell in today's vicious music industry and what should be binned.
Another reason American Idol will not be the same without Simon is the fact that it will be, in one word, boring! Paula and Randy, although they do come up with good criticisms at times, are just too superficial. They are too afraid to say the truth for fear of offending the contestants. Whereas, Simon is not afraid to poke fun at a bad performance or to criticise contestants who either have no talent, or are not performing well. This is in line with the reality television obsession theory, whereby reality TV addicts have the perverted desire to see other people being made fun of. Hence, Simon Cowell helps bring up the ratings of American Idol to what it has been today.
All I can say is bring on American Idol! I know for a fact if for some reasons Simon decides not to be the judge again, I will definitely not watch the show. Perhaps I'm one of those perverted TV watcher, but hey, that's what makes reality TV interesting!
