Freezing for fashion: When looking cool is more important than staying warm

Fashion takes a toll when winter blows in, especially after fall has had its magnificent run. Unfortunately, many people think that winter is a time to stay warm and comfortable. While this may be the case, it is important to remember that fashion still does exist during this freezing season. The winter blues are not an excuse to wear sweatpants, puffy unflattering coats, and those dreadful Uggs; you can still look your best even in the chilliest of weather. In order to do so, you can purchase several key pieces to spice up any drab winter wardrobe and not let the weather get the best of you or your style.

The most important piece in a winter wardrobe is of course, a good coat. When purchasing a coat, it is probably best to consider neutral colors such as black, brown, or beige so that the coat will match with almost anything you wear underneath. Try to purchase something that is not too trendy or over the top so that it will last the entire winter season. Look for coats with simple, clean-cut lines and make sure the coat fits well. Even the most beautiful coat will not be flattering if it is not well tailored.

Jeans are another noteworthy element to add to your winter weather collection. My personal preference is for darker jeans in the wintertime but if done right, light jeans can work well too. The best part about investing in good jeans is that not only can they be worn in the winter months, but all year round. Look for jeans that fit well but that are not too tight or too loose. Once again, it is important to stress that the fit of your clothes is essential to looking your very best in a season when the unfashionable will be wearing baggy unflattering clothing. Stand out from the sweatshirt wearing masses and wear clothes that actually fit!

As for shoes, this can be especially tricky if you live in a place where snow is almost always expected. Instead of giving into temptation and turning to those old reliable Uggs, be bold and look for different styles. Boots are going to be essential in this weather but opt for flat leather boots, riding boots, or even rain boots instead. If you must wear snow boots, at least shop around and look for something fashionable. You do not necessarily have to sacrifice the comfort and practical aspects of the shoe but do notsolely focus on these two elements.

Of course, just because it is winter does not give you an excuse to forget accessories. Try to get bold colorful scarves that will not only look great with your outfit but that can brighten somebody's day. A cute pair of gloves or mittens is also handy and can be a fun fashion accessory at the same time. Perhaps even a hat can be a good option. The only thing to remember when dealing with accessories is to not wear too many contrasting styles or colors at once.

Now that you have the basics down, there are some rules about what NOT to wear. No matter how cold it is, do not ever wear sweatpants or sweatshirts. I do not care how cold it is, whether the sweatshirt has the name of your college on it, or if you just want to be comfortable. Sweatshirts and sweatpants are for just that, sweating. It is the easiest way to let others know that you do not care about fashion during the winter season.

Remember, the next time you peer out your window or check the weather and see that it is going to be a cold and blustery day, do not let the weather get the best of you. Put on your stylish outfit that is sure to get you compliments by those lazy sweatshirt-wearing people who admire your winter style.
