The first online role playing games in the all new Role Playing Game Chat Network. Witchcraft, written by C. J. Carella for Eden Studios, is a game set in the modern world where magic is used to defend the world against the dark forces that threaten it. Battle the mad gods and their minions or become a follower of their twisted power. While the world sleeps, never knowing the powers that lurk in the shadows, covens and associations form and battle for salvation. The core book is available as a free download offered by the publishers, so there is never a charge to play. The expansion books are available at reasonable prices at book stores and even online from the publisher to allow more character types to be played, and more backgrounds to be added.
The chat is set in Seattle, a city with many secrets and people of all types. A city where anything can happen, where some areas are still hide the past. To explain the chats one must know table top games or have played on other chats before. The game is not played with set stories, though there are story lines that the moderators add to push things along. Instead the characters form their own. Politics within the groups and covens play out, struggles for power or some will work toward a common goal. The game is in the players hands as much as the moderators. The chat client is a Java applet (Sun Java 1.6 required) so no downloads needed, also making it safe and accessible from almost anywhere.
The moderators, while having the final say, are fair and balanced, hand picked by the chat master personally for their qualities as well as their short comings. No one will be ignored as well, for without the players there is no game, and without the moderators there is no fairness, so all voices are important. The chat master will personally listen and even consider all sides of an argument and make rulings as fair as possible, without prejudice. When you first start your character must be sanctioned to gain experience, but you can play even without that as long as you do not adversly effect any other characters until sanctioned. Sanctioning merely shows that the character was created according to the rules and that all the points add up, this does not mean it is perfect. Even the least thought out characters are useful, they just live longer the more thought you put into them.
As the chat grows more games will be added. The most important aspects of the characters are the stories and personalities. This focus on what makes them who they are will create a higher level of stories than video games could possibly offer. Online of offline, true role playing games are very story focused and no video game could ever compare to the depth in which these stories are told. The most interesting characters will survive longer for one simple reason, fewer players will want to see them go, while characters that are just a bunch of numbers will often die off quickly but are still important because everyone needs some cannon fodder for target practice. So depending on your play style and your own story telling ability there is fun for all, come, stop by and check it out. You have much to gain and little to lose.
