Your diet at work

Dieting is difficult even in the best of circumstances. Dieting in the workplace can be especially overwhelming because we are presented with constant challenges that can cause us to lose our focus and eventually give up. This doesn't have to be the result. Workplace dieting is difficult, but not impossible. There are ways to improve the odds and perhaps even have some fun along the way.

We've all heard advice like "keep fresh carrot and celery sticks around to munch on when others are having dessert." To me, this type of advice can actually set you up for failure because, if you are like most people who need to lose a few pounds, carrot and celery sticks are not your first choice. Presented with a co-worker selling chocolate bars to support Little League, your charitable side is bound to win out and your veggie snacks will never even make it out of your lunch bag. With this in mind, here are some practical strategies for keeping your diet in check while the rest of the office indulges.

Pack your food as often as possible but when you do, treat yourself to some favorites. Choose fruits and vegetables that are exotic or out of season. Bring fresh berries or melons. Whenever possible, buy them already cut into little squares so that preparation doesn't turn into another excuse to grab a cookie instead. Fresh pineapple is a great alternative to snacks full of refined sugar. Add fresh shrimp or crab meat to your salad at lunch, or prepare a sandwich on whole a grain pita with your favorite lean meat, sprouts and fresh spinach. You can even add a little horseradish to that fat-free mayonnaise for a little kick. When your co-workers are ordering from the local deli, you'll know you already have a gourmet lunch for yourself that can rival the best of them.

Planning can save your diet from disaster. Many offices have a monthly birthday celebration. Mark those days on your calendar and plan ahead. Bring a nice piece of angel food cake with fresh raspberries to enjoy while the others are devouring cake loaded with calories, fat and butter cream frosting.

When the sign-up sheet goes around for the next pot-luck lunch, find a great new recipe online and bring enough for everyone, along with a salad. If you bring a terrific new dish that you can eat without guilt, it will be much easier to avoid the fried chicken or Swedish meatballs. If a brunch is planned, try bringing a casserole made of fresh potatoes, veggie-sausage crumbles, egg beaters and low-fat cheese. Your peers
