To smoke or not to smoke

by Rox Anne Cavazos

Created on: October 15, 2008

In the year 2000 there were five million smoke related deaths reported world wide. Many say banning smoking from public places would make it simpler for them to go out and eat at restaurants. Other's say they can not live without smoking because it has become a routine habit for them. Smoking should be banned because we would get faster service in public places, it would lessen the influence it has on our children, and it also helps support segregation in a way.

Smoking should be banned from public places because we in return will get better, and faster service. For example you go to a restaurant at times they will make you wait for tables and to be serviced. People have to put up with slow service just because; we have to wait for either a smoking, or non smoking table. Many times there have been long waits, more than half an hour. Banning smoking would make it quicker and more enjoyable for all of us to go enjoy a nice lunch or dinner with our loved ones.

Another reason, is banning smoking would lessen the influence it has on our children. When we go out anywhere you see people smoking outside, inside, many times they do it in groups anywhere they can get away with it. You can see the clouds of smoke. Besides magazines people are our children's advertisements for smoking. We go out and our children see these people smoking and they think "How cool, that guy outside is smoking". Banning smoking would be one less influence we would have to worry about in the protection of our children.

As silly as it sounds smoking actually helps support a form of segregation. Nobody notices this because now at days many don't think it still exists. Yet it does. No one notices how when they go to many public places they ask you, smoking or non smoking? It's as if their asking you what's your class rich or poor the cool and the not cool. Separation of the people, which is what smoking influences. Banning smoking would make us all feel equal when it comes to this.

In the end it all comes down to what do you think really is best for not only ourselves, but for our environment, for our children and our children's, children. If it were not for all the polution then, there would not be a need to "Go Green". Unfortunatley thanks to careing people coming up with new ways to improve our environment instead of hurting it. All there is to say now is that our future lies in the hands of those who decide to ban the smoking epidemic!
