Calories burned during exercises depends on various different factors. One major factor is your weight, a person weighing 125 pounds will burn less calories than someone who weighs 200 pounds. The speed and technique used to perform the exercise also has to be taken into consideration. The faster and more energetic the exercise, the more calories will be burned. However, there are some types of exercise that burn more calories than others. The calorie loss in this article is based on the person weighing 150 pounds. Always consult your doctor before beginning any new exercise. It's advisable to also contact a fitness instructor who will be able to inform you of how to safely do these exercises.

Running - 131 calories.

This is based on running 1 mile in 9 minutes. Running is a great exercise, it doesn't cost anything to run around your local area. It can be sociable too, if you get a group of friends together for the run. The great advantage is that you don't need to spend money on a lot of expensive fitness equipment to do this exercise. It burns a lot more calories than most other exercises. Use reflective gear if running at night. If you haven't exercised in a while, start off with walking, then jogging, and build up slowly to the running stage.

Swimming - 100 calories.

For 10 minutes of the back stroke you can burn 100 calories. Different types of swimming have different calorie loss potential. The back stroke is the form of swimming that burns more calories than any other. Although, the slow crawl and the breast stroke come close seconds in terms of most calorie burning. You can even lose calories just by treading water, which will burn 30 calories if done for 10 minutes.

Cycling - 40 calories.

40 calories will be burned if you cycle at 5.5 miles per hour for 10 minutes. Cycling is great for toning the muscles, and keeping fit in general. The faster you cycle the more calories will get burned. If you cycle at 9.4 miles per hour then you can burn an extra 20 calories, and racing can burn almost 100. As with any exercises always make sure you have a physical before attempting to cycle at any great speeds.

Step Aerobics - 61 calories.

This would be based on a 10 minute workout with a bench height of 6 inches. If the height is higher, then more calories will be burned during the course of this exercise. Step aerobics are a good way to keep fit, and can be fun if you join a class. The instructor will also be able to inform you of safe exercising techniques.

Football - 93 calories.

If football is played for 10 minutes then the person will burn around 93 calories. This is a very energetic sport and burns a lot of calories due to the high impact of exercising throughout the game.

Skiing - 94 calories.

Cross country skiing can help you burn 94 calories for every 10 minutes you are doing it. It's another energetic sport that can be done in a social group. Some people prefer to exercise alone, some don't, whatever your preference cross country skiing can be done either way.

Now all that is left to do is to start excercising and burning those calories! Be sure to be safe, warm up, do stretches before excercise, and make sure you have a cooling down period afterwards.
