Hot summer workouts

As the summer sun beats down on us, it would be so easy to retreat to a cool air conditioned room and read a book. But that's not going to help you keep that trim, sexy body that you've worked so hard to attain. Instead, let's take a look at some activities that are perfect for enticing you into working out, in spite of Ole Sol.

Water sports have to top the list. With the weather often too cold to enjoy the lake during the other seasons of the year, take advantage of the summer's heat. Swim, ski, snorkel or just enjoy an afternoon in a paddleboat or canoe.

Rollerblading is a favorite of many people. Whether you're just skating down an area sidewalk or trying your hand at some of the more extreme aspects of the sport, be sure and wear the proper safety equipment. Knee and elbow pads, gloves and a helmet will help protect you from serious injuries in the event of a fall.

Get your bike out of the garage, dust off the handlebars and step up on those pedals. Check with your local bike shop and find out if there are any bike clubs in the area. They often offer rides to neighboring communities that range from short 5 mile rides to all day excursions. Again, be sure to wear the appropriate safety gear and don't sign up for a twenty or thirty mile trip if you haven't been on your bike since you got out of high school ten years ago.

See if your community has a rock climbing wall or a disk golf course. Both of these sports are becoming increasingly popular. Check with your local parks and recreation department or area colleges.

Tennis, volleyball, softball, basketball and baseball are all great sports to indulge in during the summer. Area parks generally have a volleyball court, tennis court, basketball court and softball field that are open to the public. Many communities have softball and volleyball tournaments and teams are always looking for players. If you can't find a team, get with a group of friends or co-workers and form one.

When it's just too darned hot outside, don't forget that your local ice-skating rink is a great place to go exercise and cool off at the same time. Roller rinks and bowling alleys are also open in the summer and are generally cooler than it is outside.

Just because it's hot outside doesn't mean that you can't exercise and stay fit. Stay hydrated and watch for signs of heat exhaustion, but get out there and enjoy yourself. Before you know it, there will be rain and snow and you'll find yourself wishing it was summer again.
