Most people work out in order to look good, feel better, and improve their health. Some forms of working out are fun, while others aren't as enjoyable. Why would you work so hard to improve your health, appearance, and physical well-being, then jeopardize it by risking a preventable injury? Not every accident or injury can be avoided, but using some common sense can keep you healthy and keep your workout on track. In order to maximize the benefits of your routine, you need to make sure you're being smart about safety.
When exercising, you may enjoy listening to music to get motivated. This is a great idea, but it needs to be done properly. Wear ear buds that go inside the ear rather than large stereo headphones
that can prevent you from hearing sounds in the environment. Also make sure the volume is at a level that will allow you to hear sounds such as car horns, sirens, and other sounds that can alert you to danger. When riding a bicycle or skateboard, be sure to wear a helmet or padding when necessary. A small hole or bump can throw you off you're bike and cause an injury, and wearing a helmet could possibly mean the difference between life or death. Also be sure to wear reflective clothing. When you're running or biking, you know the cars are there, but they need to know that you're there.
When lifting weights or doing any type of resistance training, make sure you're movements are controlled and you are isolating the correct muscle. Your workout is being done to build muscle, not to strain them. Failing to control the movements could lead to nagging injuries that could short circuit your workout. Also, when lifting heavy weights, be sure to have a partner spot you. Having some one to help you with a heavy weight after your muscles have been exhausted is good insurance against an accident.
In order to protect your health, consider buying equipment to protect your safety. If you enjoy lifting weight, purchase a belt for lower back support. For bicycling, roller blading, or skateboarding, purchase a helmet, and pads. Also, if you have any physical limitations or concerns, consult your doctor about the need for braces and discuss any possible physical limitations. Making small modifications in your workout can greatly reduce the risk of injury.
Finally, regardless of the nature of your exercise routine, always remember to stretch before and after your workout, warm-up first, and drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Preparing your body to be ready is as important as the workout itself. Pre-workout preparation is the foundation that a good workout is built on. Good luck and don't get injured!
