It is imperative we understand what poetry is and why it is written. Poetry is a combination of the heart and the mind. The heart can not impart its words without the mind and the mind is not capable of putting words of compassion and understanding on paper without the heart. When we try to divide the heart and the mind and separate their unity, their joint understanding then we have lost the whole meaning of poetry.
When I write poetry my heart imparts to my mind part of myself. What you read is indeed the very soul of the poet, the heart and mind of the adventure recreated for the reader. The heart imparts the emotions; such as loneliness, love, happiness, grief and more then the mind takes these emotions and puts them into words of understanding. Without this step it would be impossible for a person to really get the meaning behind the poem being read.
Every poet must reveal his insides, his soul, in order to write. If we take a subject such as love we must ask "how does the mind interpret the emotions and feelings of love". Through thought and understanding we are able to take the emotions and put words to them for the reader so they will understand what the heart is trying to say. I love you is a phrase used an almost ridiculous amount of times. After a period of over usage the words become just that words. They have no meaning they flow like water from a faucet. However, the Poet can take these words and put them into undeniable beauty.
I love you,
not the way that others do, but in my own way.
I love you, with the light that brightens the darkest night, with simplicity and laughter,
with tears that come from the gift of joy,
when new babies are born,
when the eyes of the old twinkle like stars.
I love you,
this love you can never change or take away,
you can not lessen it's depth or purity.
I love you,
with the newness of day and the beauty of night.
Hand in hand we see this world together.
I love you
This poem was created in the heart and in the mind. In order to see beyond what the mind sees you must look into the heart and understand the emotions of the poem and listen to the heart felt understanding which the mind is trying to bring together. One final thought, when you read a poem you are looking into the heart and soul of the poet. There is no other type of writing where a poet can bring closeness in the audience and in the reading community at large.
