Poetry: Going home

by Gregory Gower

Created on: October 14, 2008

His Day Is Done

He had just finished his weary war torn time

Travelling by train from the city grime

And soon the countryside he knew met his gaze

His heart snatched the comfort of homestead graze

What would meet his eyes, the change of country scene

Of men and women he once knew that might have been

Who went to war for country and the King

Not homeward bound like he but felt death's sting

Out in foreign fields and muddy trenches defending

No heroes welcome, no shouts of joy or arms extending

For he had touched and favoured a victory won

And for his trouble, his brave spirit, his day is done
