His Day Is Done
He had just finished his weary war torn time
Travelling by train from the city grime
And soon the countryside he knew met his gaze
His heart snatched the comfort of homestead graze
What would meet his eyes, the change of country scene
Of men and women he once knew that might have been
Who went to war for country and the King
Not homeward bound like he but felt death's sting
Out in foreign fields and muddy trenches defending
No heroes welcome, no shouts of joy or arms extending
For he had touched and favoured a victory won
And for his trouble, his brave spirit, his day is done
