Illegal aliens should not be given a path to citizenship. The only problem is that we could not possibly deport all the illegals that are currently in the United States. Our economy has been set up to use cheap imported labor. This has been going on since the 1800'S. Chinese labor was brought in to build at least the western portion of the Continental railroad. Irish, Italian, polish and a whole host of others have been coming over our borders to participate in our bustling economy. In the 1890's Chicago had a large Mexican minority living and thriving in the city. It is estimated that somewhere between 6 million and as high as 20 million illegal aliens are living in the United States right now. With our latest sub-prime loan fiasco, it is safe to say that some illegals actually received home loans and are proud illegal alien homeowners right now. We all have been in a store only to find that a large percentage of the help does not even speak English. If we were to deport all illegals next week, there would be more foreclosures, business closings, and general chaos in the economy.
The only strategy that makes any sense is to start setting up our economy to rely on more educated better trained workers. Picking fruits and vegetables, for instance could be more mechanized if we only had the will to do it. But why bother when hundreds of thousands of seasonal workers are only a walk across our open borders. Other countries do not need to give their citizens assistence when they can give a government sanctioned I.D. card that would allow their citizens to come and work in the United States. We would need to take the next 20 to 30 years to set up an economy that could survive with only legal immigration.
The first step would be to close the borders of our country. This could be achieved in about 5 years. Second, outlaw sanctuary cities that allow illegals full access to jobs, health care, social security, and food stamp assistance programs. Third, when an illegal is caught send them back. We all need to realize that this may be more difficult than it seems. Many illegal aliens have legal children. These children often after turning to the age of consent sponsor their families one at a time to legalize them. At some point we will have to send our citizens with their illegal parents. The news will show loving families split apart by an unfeeling government. Lastly, we cannot let illegal aliens take money out of he country to retire on. As I write, the U.S. government sends Social Security checks to foreign countries, in order to give these aliens the money that they accrued while working illegally in the United States. After all, our government is the great enabler.
This cycle needs to stop but we cannot throw out the baby with the bath water. Our country has been turning a blind eye to this problem for almost 200 years. We cannot change it with the flip of a switch.
