Things to consider before joining a gym

New Year's Eve is right around the corner, and nothing beats the thought of wearing your swanky size-6 dress for the festivities. With the holidays coming up, it's a good idea to join a gym in order to combat those pesky extra pounds looming in the gravy. Now, it's time to take a look realistically at what you are facing when and if you decide to join a gym.

Can you afford it? So many gyms these days are filled with extras you will never use, but consequently pay for. Will you use the Tanning Salon? Sauna? Pool? Herbal Remedy Bar? Honestly ask yourself these questions. If the gym you are looking at joining has all these amenities you won't use, the price will probably be higher than you should pay. Look for something you can pay for without going broke. After all, what good is it to have that great pair of legs, but no money to buy a great skirt to show them off?

Do you feel comfortable? Go for a tour and take note of the clientele. Are there a lot of men in muscle shirts and spandex? Do you feel comfortable enough to wear your shorts and sweat in front of them? Take a tour of the facility during the time frame you would frequent the gym. This is a good indication of the type of people you will working out with. Is there a group of girls that like to socialize at the gym? Do women wear next to nothing? You don't want to find yourself in your t-shirt and sweats while others are in sexy outfits. Ask about dress codes. Some gyms have and abide by strict dress codes so everyone looks the same. This is a great perk for those starting out.

Time management. Many times, people like the idea of going to the gym rather than actually doing it. When will you go? Are you a morning person or an afternoon? Lunch or evening? Set a plan in place before you sign on the dotted line. Keep in mind travel time to and from the gym, dress time, workout time, and getting cleaned up time. You know yourself much better than any other trainer or salesperson in the gym. If it helps, write down your plan to keep your time schedule in mind when you visit the facility.

Look for the perks you WILL use. Think about not only what will keep you motivated in working out, but also what will entice you to go to the gym. A women's only gym is perfect for women getting started. There is no pressure, and no insecurities about how to use machines. Sometimes bigger gyms even have workout rooms that are only for women. Personal trainers that fit your style are a good use of time and money, if you can stick to the plan provided. Trainers also will hold you accountable for your actions a perfect motivation. Free towels? Clean showers? Televisions with cable? Aerobics classes in your time frame? Look into all these options as something you might want to use. If you work out in the morning, and plan on taking a shower there before work, a clean shower is a definite must.

Joining a gym can be a wonderful experience, physically and emotionally. Before you take the plunge, make sure all avenues are thought out on your own personal lifestyle. It will be worth it in the long run.
