With late night infomercials promising miraculous results, it's easy to fall for gimmicks when it comes to purchasing workout gadgets. The fine print usually says "results not typical" for a reason. But, before you become disheartened, there are some tried and true workout gadgets and accessories that, when not allowed to collect dust, really do work.

AEROBIC STEP

The aerobic step is a simple accessory that can make a huge difference in the quality of your cardio workout. The basic four inch aerobic step helps you intensify your aerobic workout, but still allows you to perform a low impact exercise that's easy on your joints. This relatively low cost workout accessory is simple to use and easy to store, making it a great addition to your home gym. You can find aerobic steps ranging from $25 to $100. When considering the price, keep in mind that many of the higher end aerobic steps are adjustable, allowing you to increase your step in two inch increments. Purchasing one of these models could actually save you money in the long run as your fitness level increases.

FITNESS BALL

Also known as Yoga balls or stability balls, fitness balls are a legitimate way to increase the intensity of your workout. The instability of the ball forces you to use your core to stabilize yourself, giving you even greater results from your workout. When it comes to choosing the right size, the general rule is that you should be able to easily balance your feet on the ground while sitting on the ball, with your hips and knees at right angles. You can purchase a basic ball for as little as $10 or you can find fitness ball kits that include air pumps and DVDs.

FOAM ROLLER

At first glance, one might think that the kids left their pool toys sitting around. Not so. The foam roller is a low cost fitness accessory that can provide priceless results. Available for as little as $20, low density and high density foam rollers can improve mobility and performance and relieve muscle tension. By rolling your body weight along the foam roller, the massaging action helps to break down painful trigger points and improve your muscles, tendons, and ligaments. A foam roller is a great addition to your before and after stretches.

JUMP ROPE

Jump ropes are often associated with child's play, but a jump rope is actually an important and popular piece of fitness equipment. Whether you are a beginner or a professional athlete, the jump rope will aid you in developing or improving your speed, agility, strength, and endurance. High performance and endurance building jump ropes tend to range from $15 to $40. An excellent choice for overall conditioning is a durable leather jump rope with ball bearings encased in padded, wooden handles.

PILATES EQUIPMENT

Pilates is an excellent way to develop that all-important core and engage several muscle groups at once. A floor mat and a Pilates instructional video or DVD are all you need to get started, but if you are wanting to add some variety to your routine you can purchase accessories, often referred to as Pilates props. Resistance bands, balls, or the Pilates ring will take your workout to another level. The Pilates ring adds resistance to your workout and is especially useful when working your inner and outer thighs, arms, and chest. Pilates rings can range from $14 for a basic ring to $80 for a ring and DVD set.
