Things to consider before joining a gym

Gyms have become more and more popular over the years as a means of keeping fit, socialising, and winding down after a busy day, but how do you know if it is the right place for you? All gyms require an annual membership, which is required to be paid either all at once or by monthly instalments, and the cost of these can vary greatly from one gym to another. There are so many gyms opening up nowadays too, that it can be an almost impossible task to know which one to choose. If you feel that the gym might be the right place for you, but you're not completely sure and really don't know where to begin, then these top ten tips should help to set you on the right track:

1. Why do you want to join a gym? This may sound like a silly question, but have you really asked yourself this? If you just want to get yourself in better condition then there are lots of ways to get fit other than going down to the gym. You could try walking, running, swimming, cycling, etc. All these forms of exercise will utilise certain muscles and help to keep you fit. You could even make a regular slot for any of these exercises with a friend, or group of friends.

2. What is it all going to cost you? Well, if you still want to get down to the gym, this is the million dollar question. Gyms don't come cheap, and once you've paid your yearly subscription you need to get your money's worth out of it. Many gyms send out fliers offering free trial visits and reduced fees for the first year, etc. These are worth looking out for, especially if any of them are close by. If you do decide to go ahead and join a particular gym, DON'T sign on the dotted line until you are completely happy with all the terms and conditions.

3. Is the gym convenient for regular use? This is another important point to consider. To get full use out of your membership, you will need to attend the gym regularly. If the gym is too far to travel then it may not be the best option, and if the opening hours aren't particularly suitable either, then you may soon find yourself losing interest.

4. Do you feel comfortable in the gym? If you are going to attend something regularly, then you need to feel comfortable. If the place is too dingy, cold, hot, small, lacking in equipment, etc. then think again. You may even feel happier in a same-sex gym, or one that caters for older or younger people.

5. Have you done your research? Although gyms do have people to help you, it would be a good idea to do some research on the type of equipment you
