I am not a poet by any means, however I have found I can write poetry. I marvel at the brilliance of acclaimed poets, but let's face it not all of us can have that much creativity or vast expanse of words in our vocabulary. Does this mean we should not write poetry? My simple answer to that is of course it doesn't. Anybody who feels emotions, who wants to express themselves in words, should at least have a go.
When it comes to writing a short love poem, I recommend starting rough and moulding the words and passages to suit the emotions you are trying to convey. Keep the corny out of it, and use words that you use every day. Cheesy rhyming lines usually make the poem more humorous than romantic, but maybe you are going for that. If that is the case, then by all means look up a rhyming site and write away.
The other thing to keep in mind is what you are trying to convey with the poem. The words and lines that you use should reflect the emotion you are feeling. I don't believe there are hard and fast rules with writing any genre, especially poetry. If it evokes a similar emotion in the person it is intended for then you've accomplished your goal.
If you don't normally use lovey dovey words, why start now? I'm sure you would like it to sound like you've written it, not some "Romeo poet writer" you've hired or copied from. Words of affection vary and will sound more natural than over the top soppy words. However if you do speak in that way with your intended recipient then of course make sure you include them.
The length of the poem will depend on how much you want to say. Short and to the point works better for some, especially if poems are new to your forte.
But the first thing you need to do is start writing it down.
So what are you waiting for?..... roses are red ...
