Short stories: Hard lessons

by J. Lee Kenser

Created on: October 14, 2008

The first shot rang out as people began to scramble out of the mall the lone gunman was walking right down the middle rifle in hand smoke pouring from the barrel. He had a crazed look in his eyes as he approached the only person not hiding or running from him.

Jim Cook took a deep breath as the gunman walked up to him with his rifle pointing at the unarmed Security guard. He never heard all the people hiding begging him to hide from him. He looked him right in the eyes as he stood his 5'8" frame right in the open the only thing between the gunman and the rest of the hiding employees and guests.

"It's not your day rent a cop." the gunman said under his breath as he pointed the weapon at Jim's face. Jim never moved and never wavered as he heard the first click of the safety being turned off.

Jim looked at the man as he took out his wallet and began to open it. "You're not going to buy your way out of this one so don't bother." the gunman snapped. Jim kept on going staring at the gunman's eyes as he pulled out a picture from his wallet.

"This is my family, they are all I have but, if you're going to shoot me so be it. I will not let you harm anyone else while I am alive. So shoot me and remember that one day when you're sitting in court these people will be staring at you wondering why you're not dead."

The gunman paused for a second and then began to laugh as he began to pull the trigger Jim lunged at the weapon lifting the barrel to the ceiling dropping his picture struggling with the gunman for control of the weapon. "Bang" a shot rang out as several more hit the ceiling above them. Jim hit the gunman in the chin as he stumbled Jim took the weapon from him.

"So, you want to come in here and kill do you?" Jim asked. "Well here is what you're not going to see from the back end of a weapon. You ever looked down the barrel as it about to blow your head off? Have you answer me, you cheap excuse for a life." Jim was screaming at him like a Drill Sergeant in Army as he reached down and pulled out a magazine from the gunman's jacket pocket striking him with the butt end of the rifle.

"Get out all of you now!" Jim screamed forcing everyone else out of the building. "So you want to kill but, you're too shy to show your face? Not anymore." Jim pulled the mask off the gunman and there was a 15 yr. Old male with blue eyes, blonde hair cut short military style. "What the heck were you thinking? Did you think you were going to be famous? Answer me boy!" he was yelling at him louder
