The weather outside is frightful, but you still need to workout by nightfall. Even if you're not a winter weather lover, there are lots of healthy activities that are perfect for keeping you in shape on those cold winter days and nights.
Walking is a universal workout. When it's just too cold to walk outside, there are lots of other options. Shopping malls are made for walking and window shopping. Many malls open early just for mall walkers and some malls offer incentives and activities for the regular walkers. Ask at the information desk about the distance around the mall and if there are any walking rules, then tie up your shoes and walk.
Dancing is a perfect activity to get you warmed up and your blood moving. No matter what type of dancing or music you like, there are clubs and community organizations that offer dancing opportunities. If you feel you need a little instruction before hitting the clubs, many communities offer dance classes ranging from ballroom to salsa and everything in between.
If it's too cold to step outside, why not try a workout video in your own living room. Many libraries have workout videos available to check out at no cost or rent one at a video store. Try that new workout routine everyone's talking about, or get back into the yoga you gave up a few years ago. Home workout videos let you choose the workout, the time, and the place, without having to pay for a gym membership.
If you start to get cabin fever don't be afraid to step outside and experience winter activities. I love nothing more than to take a walk right after a big snow. Take along your camera and take pictures of the winter wonderland that has just appeared. Usually, it is quiet and calm after a snowfall, and if you get out quick enough it seems like it's just you and the snow, until of course your neighbor fires up the snow blower.
Sledding is another activity that gets you warmed up and gets your heart pumping. If the ride down a steep hill doesn't give you a thrill, the walk back up will. Of course, no sledding expedition is complete without considerable laughing so be ready to have a good time.
If sledding sounds like too much work how does rolling snow into balls, big or little, sound? Making a snowman is a workout in itself. Bending over and rolling the snow into different sized balls and then lifting those balls onto each other is a great weight workout. Of course the littler snow balls call for a snow ball fight with can include running, sliding, and once again laughter.
Cross-country skiing is a great cardio workout, using both upper and lower body muscle groups. Many communities offer groomed trails that allow you to see nature as you glide along.
Ice skating is another winter activity that offers a great workout while having fun. Check your local listing for areas where ice skating is allowed. Many ice skating areas will offer skate rentals, warming shacks, and concessions.
Winter is a wonderful time to take advantage of many activities that aren't available during the warmer months. So slip on your boots and coat, grab your hat and gloves, and get out there and enjoy all that winter has to offer.
