The human brain is an amazing thing. Not only does it store memories, it continuously adds new information. Like muscles of the body, the better you nourish and the more you use it, the stronger it becomes.
Medical professionals have long been telling how important a good diet and proper exercise are for the body and the brain. This still remains true, but there are also other things people can do to keep their minds sharp.
1.) Music is a wonderful way to relax your mind as well as expand it. Researchers suggest classical, personally I feel it should be whatever type you enjoy. An even better way music can increase brain function is by learning to play, or if you already know how, to practice and improve.
2.) Challenge yourself to new experiences. Any type of sensory input, new experiences learned, expands the mind and therefore increases brain function.
3.) Reading is an excellent way to keep your mind active. Not only does it provide a way to expand your knowledge but also a way to use your imagination as you are transported to unknown destinations, experiencing things in your mind you would never be able to really do.
Reading can also teach. There is reading material on almost anything anyone can imagine. Learn more about something that interests you, somewhere you would like to one day go, even something that has troubled you.
4.) For me personally, writing seems to help a great deal. For one, it relaxes me and gives me a way to relieve stress. Writing gives me a constructive and productive way to deal with things that go on in my life.
Occasionally I try to write on topics I am not completely familiar with. Things that I have to research to learn more about before I am able to write on them. This not only gives me a way to temporarily forget the things that are stressing me, but also a way to learn about new things, and gain interest in areas I may not have thought I had any.
5.) Games are also a good way to keep your mind sharp. Word games, strategy games, anything that makes you think. Any game that makes you use your mind.
6.) The proper amount of rest is also very important. Even though your brain never stops working, sleep is not only important for the rest of your body but for the brain also.
Even though the brain is an amazing part of the human body, one that is still not completely understood, we do know there are things to increase brain function. As we all age, we realize the importance of using our mind to its full potential, to keeping it active. The important thing is to do what works best for you.
