As a college student, I would often hear people talk about ghost experiences but usually chalked it up to them being a bit loony or even having a serious mental disorder. I did continue to read about the famous haunted areas in North Carolina and even discussed with other college students about visiting these sites some night. Many of these students claimed to have visited the devil's stomping grounds or some other place, but never really believed their stories since we usually were discussing these things over more than a few beers.
As an adult, I even did a campfire program on haunted areas of North Carolina. What I found at these programs was a little unexpected. After each program, most people left laughing and cutting up while they pretended to see something haunted or try to spook some friend that had taken the program a bit too seriously. However, there were always a few people that would hang around to talk ghosts with a "real expert". I usually thought they were a bit flaky, but would oblige them in conversation until the wee hours while they told story after hair raising story. I could not at the time understand how so many people could actually take these ghost stories seriously.
Imagine my surprise, when I had the first ghost experience of my own. I had been a seasonal park ranger on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Asheville NC through the summer but had been transferred to the Doughton Park area, near Laurel Springs NC, for the fall season. I lived in a mobile home in the campground at Doughton Park and the first night I was there was interesting to say the least. I had been on road patrol until midnight and came home very tired. I collapsed in the bed knowing I had to be on duty at 7:00am the next shift. I had been asleep about a half hour, when I heard the telephone ringing in the next room. I opened my eyes to see a female figure floating over me. She sort of had a luminescent look. I looked at her for a second and she was peaceful and pretty. The phone continued to ring and as I started to get up, the peaceful figure became very ugly and violent and opened her mouth as if to scream at me. I heard no noise, but I started pounding my fists at her and she disappeared. My sister was on the phone and I told her what had happened. I know she thought I had been working too hard and sort of chalked it up to me being very tired. I did not sleep too soundly the rest of the night.
I went in to work and one of the older rangers there seemed eager to see me. The
