What Was and Will Never Be
I loved the boy he was
I don't know the man he has become.
I thought he was hurting me
I was the one causing pain.
I thought he didn't love me
I didn't know how to love myself.
I thought I could do better
I didn't know what I had.
I broke his heart
I knew nothing of my own.
I abandoned him for my better life
I didn't know how to live.
I knew nothing of his fate
I never stopped thinking about him.
I thought I was worth missing
I couldn't see my own conceit.
I searched for him sometimes
I believed he looked for me.
I was wrong
I must accept what has become.
I found him lifetimes later
I learned the truth I never saw.
I thought he loved me
I was told he never did.
I believed he knew the pain I felt
I discovered he had forgotten.
I held his interest only briefly
I now have no place in his life.
I will always love him
I deserve my broken heart.
I blamed him alone
I never even tried.

WHEN I KNEW YOU:
I knew your smell
so very well.
I laughed at every joke you'd tell.
I knew the things each day you thought.

The heart and soul of my life was bitterly thrown away
So many years were given to endure the pains of each
