The Pretenders
Powers of persuasion pilfer my thoughts
Disengaged from this world of material matters
Enraged at the nothings I have bought
With my blood sweat and tears, life in tatters
We pretend and try to make it go away
We pretend and say we're happy when we're not
We pretend to go about our every day
As if we're happy with our given lot
Relationships falter freely without a fight
Ideals become inverted and intensely inept
You fight to survive this sickening slight
Only to drown more deeply in your own debt
Sick and tired and tired of being sick
Diseases multiply to mutilate the masses
We build our boundaries brick by brick
To weaken behind our walls each day that passes
We pretend and try to make it go away
We pretend and say we're happy when we're not
We pretend to go about our every day
As if we're happy with our given lot
Society slowly suffering directly before us
Eyes veiled by this mountain of dread and debt
Cancers thriving from our mounting stress
While we do nothing but bear and fret
Money mounting malicious matters in our soul's pursuit
Blinding us with this endless search for printed paper
Capitalism corrupting everything from its roots
Wrapped in this veil of freedom thin as vapor
Answers arising just beyond our net
Illusions that we can't seem to comprehend
We shy away as if from some idle threat
And make believe is was all just pretend
