How you decide to help your child improve in science depends upon the grade level of your child. If your child is in elementary school,K-6 in most areas, teaching your child how to make good observations is essential. Teaching your child how to decribe items in the home or outdoors should involve not only how something looks, but should include numbers. Descriptions should be as precise as possible. In the classroom, students will be assessed(tested) on how specific they can be. As your child moves on into higher grades such as middle school(6-8 or 7-9 in some areas), they will be assessed on how well they can use vocabulary and how they attempt to solve problems. Science vocabulary is a must for success, and there is plenty of it. You can help your child learn science vocabulary by incorporating the vocabulary into a game. For instance, 20 questions, bingo, and hand-clapping games are lots of fun. If children can memorize the beat to a song along with the lyrics, they will remember a chant/song with science vocabulary words.
Hands-on is always a plus. Know matter if your child is in K or 9, doing simple experiments at home is a great way to help your child develop a scientific mind. Whether your mixing food coloring or try to guess which will freeze faster, hot or cold water, experiments will open the doors to great science conversation.
Finally, teaching your child how science is used in their lives on the daily basis is very important. For example, cooking is science. Using a water filter is science. Recycling in the home is science. Wet streets drying up is science. Science is everywhere! If children see the relevance of science, if they see how it affects their lives, they will be more open to learning it. There will be less, "why do I have to learn this?" to more "this makes sense to me!"
