The 2008 Electoral Smack Down is on, and the crowd is on its feet! I have been voting in the presidential election for over 30 years, and I can honestly say I have never seen the likes of this one. The primaries were professional and civil compared to the general election. This has been a three ring circus if there ever were one. He said, she said. Just what does the VP do all day? He's an Arab; she's a governor with a personal agenda that includes the destruction of her ex-brother in law. One candidate commits acts of fraud in his early senatorial career. The opposite parties candidate appears to have a name that brings the fear of terrorist attack to the hearts of many. For a presidential election of the most democratic and militarily superior countries on the planet, I find this behavior beyond respectable and worthy of our candidates.
The volume of anger is deafening, and lack of calm is frightening. The Republican Party has turned to smear and fear tactics. When you stand in a crowd of would be voters listening to them shout and yell out things like "off with his head", or "terrorist" or "kill him" it is reminiscent of the French Revolution. Selfish unscrupulous individuals with personal agendas whipped the crowds into frenzy. After successfully dividing the country and bringing about revolutionary violence the royal family was executed at the hands of these unruly crowds.
Don't think it could happen in our time. Don't be too sure. No one thought anyone could or would be capable to assassinate a sitting American President either. Ask the Kennedy family about their experience with that. No ever thought that this country would invent enough false data in order to pave the way to a war that has cost this country billions of dollars and thousands of lives. Well we all now know the answer to that.
It is this persons opinion that those running for any office have a responsibility to the public and to their opponent to run a campaign of fairness and honest in all things. To do other wise taints the voting pool with the possibility electing a person who is completely inappropriate and lacks the experience to fulfill the duties of the elected office. Some would say that politicians could care less and all they care about is getting elected and wheeling the power. Well this writer chuckles when responding to that opinion with a feeling of sadness. Gee do ya really think so? Unfortunately we all have known candidates who yes do business that way.
The question arises,
