Causes of incontinence

Incontinence is defined as the inability to control the bladder. The severity of incontinence ranges from the occasional dribble to the complete loss of control and the soaking of clothes. It is also worth mentioning that even though it is not as common- incontinence also refers to loss of control of ones bowel movements as well.

If bladder control, incontinence, is bad enough that it is affecting your day to day life and activities then you should seek advice from a health professional. In most situations incontinence can be stopped. Even if the situation cannot be remedied completely modern products and ways of managing incontinence can relieve a lot of you stress and make your life more pleasant.

It should be understood that urinary incontinence is not a disease it is a symptom. It is an indication of an underlying problem or condition that should be taken care of by consulting your health care provider.

It is possible with a few modifications in a person's lifestyle that temporary urinary incontinence can be corrected or alleviated for good. The following causes of temporary incontinence can be controlled by altering your lifestyle or habits:

Alcohol - Alcohol is a diuretic which causes the bladder to fill quickly causing you to have an uncontrolled urge to urinate.

Illness or Injury Any disability,or injury that keeps you from getting to the toilet in time is a potential cause for incontinence.

Caffeine Caffeine is a diuretic as well as alcohol and will cause your bladder to fill quickly

Dehydration If you try limiting the amount of fluid intake to curb your incontinence you may cause your urine to become concentrated. This concentrated salt in your bladder can cause irritation and make your incontinence worse.

Medications - Medicines such as sleeping pills, diuretics (water pills) and even blood pressure medicine can cause you to have uncontrollable bouts with your bladder . Urinary incontinence may also be cause by some easily treatable conditions such as:

Urinary Tract Infection - An infection in the urinary tract can cause you to have a strong urge to urinate and this could lead to bouts of incontinence.

Constipation - Many of the nerves used by the bladder are also shared by the rectum. Being constipated can cause these nerves to be overly excited triggering urination.

An underlying physical problem may cause persistent urinary incontinence. Some of these conditions relate to males while others relate to females.
