There are many important things to consider before joining a gym, but with patience and asking the right questions you will find the one that is a perfect fit for you. Now first things first. Even before searching for a gym it is highly recommended to visit your family doctor and get the okay to start your fitness plan. If you have any health problems, what are your limitations? Also if you are pregnant, what exercises are safe?
Second most important thing to consider before joining a gym is what are your expectations? I'm not talking about the expectations of the gym, but for yourself. Are you the type of person who quits easily after three months because the scale won't budge. If this is you, you might want to reconsider joining a gym until you are ready for a long term lifestyle change.
After these thoughts are considered, I have made a list that may help you in the search for your perfect gym.
Consider upfront cost and long-term cost. How much are the monthly dues? How much are fitness classes or are they included? How much are personal trainers? Is their any equipment that I have to rent? How much is the locker rent or is it included? How much does it cost if I want to cancel my contract? Are there any hidden fees and do I have to do an automatic bank deduction? Will you be able to afford the dues if they go up in price? Do you need new sneakers or workout clothing?
2. What does the club have to offer and does it fit your needs.
Lets face it, you are shoving out money for a gym membership, make sure you actually get to use it on a regular basis. Don't be afraid to ask questions. What kind of fitness classes are offered and can I keep up with the pace? Are classes offered during times that I am off work? How long in advance do I have to sign up for a class? Are the facilities clean and in good working order? Do they have the most up to date equipment? Is there a pool and sauna? Is there a women's only work out area if I am not comfortable around the men? What kind of services do they provide like water/towel service, childcare or body fat analysis? How many cardio machines are there and is there enough for everyone or will I have to wait all the time?
3. Evaluate the staff of the gym.
Did the staff of the gym greet you? Were they friendly and willing to go out of their way to help you? Did anyone offer you a tour of the gym? It is important to check out the gym before you sign on the dotted line. Still not convinced that this is the right gym for you, ask for a complimentary trial period, where you can try it out hands on for a week.
4. Which location works best for you?
It would be helpful to decide where you want your gym to be located. Do you want it to be close to home, close to work or in the middle? It depends on your lifestyle. I personally chose one close to work so I can go there immediately after work, less temptation to skip out on my workouts.
No matter what gym you decide on, just be sure it is one that makes you feel comfortable, safe and welcomed.
