Diabetes as well as anything else comes with its own fictions or myths. They are many and so many choose to believe some of them wholeheartedly when they are not even half truths just myths.
In diagnosing diabetes there are some symptoms to watch for; however, only a blood test done by a medical professional can really find diabetes.
Myths get started from people who do not know or understand the truth. They see one person's symptoms and generalize that this is the way something effects everyone. This is not the case. All illnesses and diseases affect different individuals differently.
Some of the more common myths about diabetes are as follows:
Mild Diabetes: There is no such thing as a mild case of diabetes. Either you are a diabetic or you are not. If you are it is not mild it is SERIOUS and should be considered so.
I don't feel sick or have any symptoms: While there are some symptoms associated with diabetes there is only one way to find if you have the disease and that is with a blood test.
Insulin Cures Diabetes: This is a myth of course. If your body is not producing or producing to little insulin taking insulin in a prescription form will not cure you. It is important to maintain your health but is not a cure for diabetes.
Diabetic Patients cannot eat chocolate or sweets: If combined with exercise and a healthy eating plan there is no reason sweets and chocolates cannot be consumed by a diabetic patient.
Eating To Much Sugar Causes Diabetes: Diabetes is not caused by eating to much sugar. Diabetes is a result of genetic and lifestyle factors. Being overweight; however, will contribute to the onset of Type 2 diabetes.
Diabetics are More Likely To Become Sick: This is a myth. You are no more susceptible to a cold or flu than anyone else. It is advised that diabetic patients receive a flu shot. This is because it is much harder to maintain proper glucose levels while trying to fight off an infection.
Catching Diabetes From Someone Else: This is a myth. Diabetes has been linked to hereditary traits in a person's family tree. It is not a communicable disease that can be passed from person to person like a cold or flu.
To find out the truth about diabetes ask your physician or other health care provider. Diabetes is not something to take lightly as it can kill. For more information you may contact the American Diabetes Association.
