To the un-experienced critic, free verse poetry may seem childish and somewhat foolish. Incoherent sentences and unorthodox patterns, which seem to not make sense are some of the arguments put forward against free verse poetry. Yet to other people free verse poetry represents freedom. Not needing to be bound by the common rules of grammar and prose that most poets learn to use is just what these kinds of people require to let free their emotions and create masterpieces of the same, if not better calibre than orthodox methods of poetry.
I have never been able to write 'correct' poetry. Neither in my native language of Spanish nor in English or French have I ever and provably will ever be capable of doing so. I have several times attempted to do write 'correct' poetry and only got frustration and even gave up on writing the assignment. Yet in free verse I have written some of my best schoolwork and achieved small recognition in the city I live now because of this.
Last century several types of unorthodox art movements were popular. The Dada movement, Pop Art, Warhol and Surrealism are among some of the contenders of this era. When they first appeared they were heavily criticised for their methods as they weren't cannon as well as for they openness, especially in their use of drugs and their sexual freedom.
Yet today, in the century of tacky and unoriginal art, they are celebrated as modern masters and heroes. Free verse poetry is the same. One of the few uncorrupted media of art in the 21st century, it is the Nirvana of creativity. It is the popular portal for normal people to express themselves and grow their closeness with their spiritualism and nature.
So put away your books and your Shakespeare. Liberate yourself and celebrate this form of self expression. Open your heart and minds to this, a growing and developing manifestation of creative liberty that can be achieved and understood by anyone. Only if they want be enlightened though, if not stick to your rules and grammar and miss the biggest move of art in this century.
